High serum Uric Acid Level and our food choices


Overproduction of uric acid, generated from the metabolism of purines, has been proven to play emerging roles in human disease.


What are purines and how is uric acid produced?


Purines are a natural substance found in some foods. These are molecules made up of carbon and nitrogen atoms, and are found in cells’ DNA and RNA.


Purines aren't all bad, but you should avoid high amounts.


In humans the final compound of purines catabolism is uric acid. When your body digests purine, it produces a waste product called uric acid.

All other mammals possess the enzyme uricase that converts uric acid to allantoin that is easily eliminated through urine.


Most of the time, a high uric acid level occurs when your kidneys don't eliminate uric acid efficiently ,thus potentially leading to a number of health issues.

What are the effects of elevated uric acid levels?


Elevated uric acid levels, known as hyperuricemia may cause;

  • Worsening of kidney function

  • Damage to affected joints

  • Flare up a painful type of arthritis called gout.

Gout is a painful medical condition characterized by urate crystal.


Lifestyle measures, such as dietary changes, can help lower levels of uric acid that deposits in joints and causes gout.

However, for most people, changes in diet alone are not enough to prevent gout. To reduce uric acid levels enough to stop attacks, medication is usually needed. Still making changes in what you eat can lead to fewer gouty flares.


What foods can I include?


Low-purine foods: Eat sufficiently


Medium-purine foods: Eat moderately


High-purine foods: Avoid




What one can eat? Eggs, fruits and vegetables, rice and wheat etc.


What other guidelines should I follow?

Increase liquid intake.

Liquid can help your body get rid of extra uric acid. Drink 8 to 16 cups of liquid each day. At least half of the liquid should be water. Limit or avoid alcohol.

Alcohol (especially beer) increases the risk of a gout attack. Beer contains a high amount of purine. Maintain a healthy weight.

If one is overweight ,one should lose weight slowly. Weight loss can help decrease the amount of stress on joints. Regular exercise can help lose weight if one is overweight, or maintain your weight if of normal weight.
